Sharing Media from your Computer

The Media Sources in Boxee can come from alternative computers on your Local Area Network. This means you do not patiently have to wait whilst you copy your media from your main computer to your media PC.

Network Storage Devices

The most simple and effective method of sharing your media across your network is with a NAS -- this has major benefits over other devices, primarily that your data is always accessible even if your computer isn't online. As long as the device supports Samba/SMB.

Mac OS X

Mac OS X has a file sharing protocol called Samba - this makes it very easy to setup your media sources with minimal hassle. Enable File Sharing in your Macs System Preferences and ensure you are sharing the folder that contains your media. Then, click "Options..." and specify that you wish to share your files and folders using SMB. You'll also need to enable a user for authentication - so ensure you check the checkbox for your local user account. Once enabled and setup, simply add a Network Media Source with the address of your SMB mount as your Macs address (as specified in System Preferences > Sharing.
